If you’ve ever AirDropped or emailed an iPhone photo to a Windows PC and been greeted by a file you can’t open — or a blurry, low-res preview — you’ve met HEIC. Here’s what’s going on and the fastest way to fix it.
Why won’t my iPhone photos open on Windows?
Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) by default. HEIC stores high quality in roughly half the file size of a JPG, which is great for your phone’s storage — but Windows, many websites, and older apps don’t support it out of the box. So the file either won’t open or shows up as a generic icon.
You have two options: make Windows understand HEIC, or convert the file to the universally-supported JPG. For a one-off photo, converting is faster.
