BMP files are notorious for their size. A photo that fits comfortably in a few megabytes as a JPG can be many times larger as a BMP, even though the two look identical on screen. If you have a folder of BMPs eating up storage or refusing to upload somewhere, converting them to JPG is almost always the right move. Here’s why the size gap is so large, when you should and shouldn’t make the switch, and exactly how to do it.
Why BMP files are so large
BMP (Bitmap) is an old Microsoft Windows format that stores images more or less raw. Each pixel’s color is written out explicitly, with little or no compression. A 24-bit BMP uses three bytes per pixel — one each for the red, green, and blue channels — so a 4000 x 3000 photo works out to roughly 36 million bytes of pixel data alone, before any file overhead. The format does support a run-length encoding mode, but it only applies to lower-color (4- and 8-bit) images and is rarely used, so most BMPs you encounter are fully uncompressed.
JPG (also called JPEG) takes the opposite approach. It uses lossy compression tuned for photographs: it discards fine detail your eye is least likely to notice, then packs what remains efficiently. For a typical photo, that often means roughly a tenfold reduction in file size or more, with no difference you’d spot at normal viewing distance. That’s the whole pitch of this conversion: much smaller files, visually the same photo.
Why you still run into BMPs
If the format is so inefficient, why does it keep showing up? A few reasons:
- Screenshots and screen captures. Some older Windows tools, and the classic Print Screen into Paint workflow, can save as BMP.
- Scanners and legacy software. Plenty of industrial, medical, and design applications still export BMP because it’s simple and lossless.
- Game and app assets. BMP is trivial to read and write in code, so it lingers in development pipelines and sprite sheets.
- Old archives. Files created in the 1990s and early 2000s are often BMP simply because that was an easy default at the time.
So you don’t usually choose BMP on purpose. It tends to arrive from somewhere else, and converting it is how you make it practical to store, email, or post online.
When JPG is the right target (and when it isn’t)
JPG is an excellent choice for photographs and any image with smooth color gradients — landscapes, portraits, product shots. The lossy compression was designed for exactly that kind of content.
It’s a poor choice for a few specific cases:
- Images with sharp edges and text, like logos, screenshots of a user interface, diagrams, or line art. JPG compression creates faint “ringing” artifacts around hard edges. For those, PNG keeps things crisp.
- Images that need transparency. JPG has no alpha channel, so any transparent areas get filled in with a solid color. PNG and WebP preserve transparency.
- Files you’ll re-edit and re-save many times. Each JPG save reapplies lossy compression, so quality slowly degrades. Keep a lossless master if you’ll be editing repeatedly.
One more thing worth knowing: converting BMP to JPG is a one-way trip in terms of quality. JPG throws away data it can’t recover, so it’s best to convert a copy, or to convert only once you’re confident you won’t need the original BMP.
